New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
