Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and suspected escape routes.
