The British driver Lando Norris Secures First Formula One World Championship in Yas Marina Despite Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Triumph.

Through an exhibition of nerveless driving, the McLaren driver has clinched his first Formula One world championship by taking P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A podium was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Norris executed exactly what was needed in an extremely intense race at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a number of bold overtakes, with flawless work from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Historic Achievement for British Motorsport and The Team

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris is now the eleventh driver from Britain to achieve this. It also brings to an end the team's title wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning turnaround for the team, since a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the constructors’ championship. The comeback has been helmed by boss Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an efficient outfit with a hugely competitive car.

A Tale of Two Teammates

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had led the championship for much of the season, there was obvious frustration at stumbling in the final third. A series of poor performances and some errors, such as crashing out in Baku, proved costly. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Verstappen was also brilliant to take the fight to the wire. The Dutchman did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a significant deficit in August, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, finishing just two points short.

Closing it Out with Clinical Precision

He secured his success with clinical precision to win the championship that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the last two races. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during some difficult times, believing they would return to the top. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to persist with his goal, maintaining his composure and confidence even when under the cosh. After losing the lead to Piastri earlier, he still worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race

In the race, Verstappen kept his lead through the first corner, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The first round pit stops saw Norris come out into traffic, but he passed rivals quickly and displayed great composure in his driving.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris burst up the inside line, almost completely off the track.

This moment was looked at by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps elapsing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his championship bid.

Diverging Fortunes

While Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but produced what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a podium. He has appeared weary in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
