The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
