The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business with his partner, announced how he will independently develop this new product within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
