The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire talks advance
Israelis have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the morning session finished without significant progress, amid differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future governance of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and locality areas and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the evening arrives, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported additional fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south region, medics reported.
