The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular series reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
