"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Multiple famous admirers have also petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However Haim will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
