A extensive rescue and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Operations Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine personnel, per a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Relief to the Island

The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures multiple national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bicycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic tensions have intensified in recent months, with remarks from several representatives highlighting the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Responding to previous proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its command to find the boats and guarantee the security of the crews.

At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
