When Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed pops reverberating through the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams caring for many those hurt.

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the team acted heroically from the second the shooting started until late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a council representative.

“These individuals exhibit selflessness every day in ensuring our world-famous coastlines secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much light we have seen in the face of such evil.”
